Did You Know?

47 states have enacted various forms of data privacy laws.

Potential Impact:

Liability can vary from state to state, but most laws are generally modeled after California's data privacy law. A breach in your security can have significant financial liability which can include fines as well as credit monitoring for affected individuals. For example, if you loose a hard disk with 10,000 member identities, just the credit monitoring alone could total over $1 million in financial liability.

Take Action:
  • The risk associated with security breaches can never be totally eliminated. But with a consistent approach and clear plan, a significant amount of risk can be eliminated.

  • Start with a Technology Audit to pin point trouble spots in your technology and security practices.

  • Once an action plan is determined at the end of the Technology Audit it must be implemented.

  • Security is an ongoing mission. Your security action plan should be revisited and adjusted to meet new conditions.

  • Technology Audits - Technology Audits to examine all levels of technology use in your organization. An audit may expose thousands of dollars in potential savings or serve as the basis for a more robust disaster recovery plan. In recent Technology Audits we have discovered backups that were not readable, firms paying thousands.

  • Conversion of legacy applications and databases - Many organizations start projects using Microsoft Access or Excel to store and organize information. One recent client wanted to take their 4,000 record Access database and make it into a multi-user Web application. Class Five converted the existing database to SQL server and created a Web interface for data management. This enabled our client to promote the database to his users and provides a technology platform that can scale with their business.

  • Custom development - Class Five has completed several custom systems including a multi-tier survey system which will collect and manage more than 500,000 responses in its first year and a small scale application which allows unions to better organize potential members.
